About Bumgenius Diapers 3.0 in Answers
Bumgenius 3.0 diapers are leaking. What to do? My son is a month old so I am just now learning the whole cloth diaper thing. I have bumgenius 3.0 all-in-ones and when he is laying down on his back they leak out the back and get his back all wet. I think the cloth on the inside just isn't broken in yet or something. (like a how a new towel doesn't dry very well). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to break my diapers in more so they don't leak?

Mommy to a 2yr old replied: "I have no personal experience, but I did some reading and found this website where some people were having the same probem. There are some suggestions on here as well:"

baby girl due 11~22~09! replied: "I haven't used cloth diapers yet, I'm not due for another two months =\ but my little sister who is 2 yrs old now. I remember when she was a couple months old her disposables leaked out the back like that, maybe the sizing is off or something? I don't know but it was a problem cause it happened all the time"

Diet C replied: "He may be too small for them. My daughter didn't fit into her diapers until she was about 3 months. Even though they're supposed to fit babies as small as 6 lbs, they don't fit most newborns. If they are indeed too small you can use pre-folds and covers that are fitted or you can pick up a pack of disposables. If they do fit him then they may have detergent build-up. This will happen with incorrect washing. Make sure you follow the directions on the laundry tab when you wash them. If they have build-up wash them in a few squirts of Dawn (the blue stuff) and hot water, rinse them repeatedly until all soap bubbles are gone. ETA: I forgot to mention, diapers with build-up stink! I mean really friggin' reek when they get peed on, so you should be able to tell just by the smell if it's a residue problem."

xyz replied: "we had the same problem, its funny ,you have to check his penis every time before closing the diaper,it has to be carefully placed towards down not up otherwise the urine goes to his waist and his back. if you had a girl you would never had this problem.good luck"

Cloth diaper moms, I decided 2 stock up on bumGenius 3.0 diapers for my new arrival. What about reusable wipes? I have seen these Kissaluvs and also the bumGenius bottom cleaner. Any experience with these or what is your favorite? Also, is there anywhere online I can get them cheaper in bulk? The cheapest I found was 12 for $203.40 ($16.95/diaper)

Lauren F (BCA) replied: "I use the Bumgenius cotton wipes and I really like them!! :) As for bottom cleaners, I make my own and carry a spray bottle. It's water, witch hazel, and a little Vitamin E and Tea tree oils. Works great! **That price is the norm for the BG 3.0s. There are diapers that are cheaper, like prefolds. I use all types personally. Keep in mind that to put one child in disposables from birth to potty training, we're talking THOUSANDS of dollars!! Cloth is just a big startup cost; it pays off though!"

Shut up Obber!!!! replied: ""bumGenius bottom cleaner" Wow, whatta scam. Seriously, that sort of thing should set off big "this is some unnecessary junk marketed only to relieve mothers-to-be of their last $10" alarms. Just use washcloths and water. These ones hold up to repeated washing very well..."

Poopy replied: "I agree with previous. Marketing scam. Water and washcloth is what our nurse recommended. Remember too that wipes have chemicals in them."

Amy L replied: "yep - washcloths and warm water - some natural cleaner if you like or even a simple baby wash. easy - reusable!"

kbz2002 replied: "I agree with the above people, all you really need is water and the cloth, you don't need a bottom cleaner. However I did use the California Baby Diaper Area Wash, it was great in the beginning for the really stinky stuck on poos but now I use it very little. Diapers are pretty expensive but well worth it! You can try to buy them used if price is a concern there are a lot of people who are trying to sell theirs on diaperswappers.com. I did find on Cottonbabies.com the BG seconds for $12 however all they appear to have left is blossom color. Kelly's closet has holiday 4 pack for $60 ($15.00 a piece) I do like BGs they provide the trimmest fit IMO, however they do seem to wear out quicker. Try a few different types- but keep away from the real cheapies they use material that quickly wicks. For a good source a lot of the mamas on diaperswappers.com will help, I also liked diaperpin.com for reviews."

bumgenius 3.0 diapers...laundry detergent? I hate to have to buy laundry detergent online to wash diapers, i recently found seventh generation laundry detergent at Target. Has anyone used this or have any suggestions for a detergent i can find in a retail store....i live in northern ct in case anyone does not know...bumgenuis diapers require detrergents with no enzymes, brightners, scents, etc....

Mommy to 2 little angels replied: "Don't buy it online...use TIDE with bleach... Sorry I thought they were regular old cloth diapers...I am sorry if I offended you..."

z z replied: "I haven't tried it yet but I would like to since it is all natural. You can buy it at diapers.com"

Ashlee replied: "for baby things i use ALL baby. Seventh generation is amazing and gets everything clean. I wouldnt suggest using any bleaches or hard detergents. its going right back on your babies bum and you dont want to give them a rash."

Melissa replied: "7th Generation would be fine. I use BioKleen which I find at Whole Foods and other health food stores...it works really well with the cloth diapers...You could also use Oxyclean Baby."

hi_itsgwen replied: "This is what I do with my BG's :) Hope this helps! "

T-REX Mermaid replied: "I have started researching this subject. My daughter is going to use Tide with HOT water + borax or oxyclean + bleach. For babies clothes, she will use Cold Water Tide. I use that for ALL my laundry and I am very satisfied. Also, the Tide rep. told me there is a gentle Tide for babies clothes. Also, be very careful with dryer sheets (fabric softeners, etc) when they first came out, they caused allergies and breathing problems, like asthma. I hope this has been corrected."

? replied: "I like seventh generation on my clothes, but not for cloth diapering. I used a couple natural detergents, and with all of them still had to strip the diapers every other week or less! I never did try Charlie's Soap or Soap nuts, but did the seventh, a store brand similar to seventh from a local store called Henry's and a natural brand I found at Costco. I would maybe try to see the reviews on online brands and maybe try the smallest amount possible to see how well it does work before committing to a large amount!"

Do bumGenius 3.0 ORGANIC diapers work well? I am trying to decide between bumGenius 3.0 Organic and regular bumGenius 3.0. I am sold on the organics because you don't have to mess with the pocket - it's basically a one-size all in one and I really like that idea. Also, it has a cotton inner so you don't have poly touching your baby's tooshie. The thing that is keeping me from deciding for sure is that if it doesn't have a pocket you can't make it more absorbent without using a doubler - if that's the case, then the cotton lining and the lack of a pocket are both pointless and not worth the extra money. So, are the organics absorbent enough to take the place of the pockets?

Christina T replied: "I think the regular ones are more absorbent. I only used these for a minute. I went through that whole go green faze. I know use just Seventh Generation. Which is an all natural diaper and biodegradable. Sometimes I use Gdiapers."

lady madonna baby at your breast replied: "I haven't and I'm not really going to be able to give you the answer you're looking for but the 'con' of an all in one is that it takes longer to dry. with the removable inserts, you can not only add as many as you like, but they take less drying time because you're separating all of that. just a thought. I'm sure that the bumgenius organics are great though -- we use the regular and I rarely have to use a doubler. but, I prefer the pocket just because of the drying time (I pay for laundry too so that's a big thing). hope I helped somewhat!"

Irritated Lactivist replied: "I have some of the new Organic BGs with snaps, and they are SO nice! If you turn them inside out and snap it together, the diaper dries easily in one cycle. ;) I have some original 3.0s, with aplix; they are great but I hated how fast the aplix wore out. From now on I ONLY buy snap diapers! *The organic AIOS are not meant for night use. If you wanted to use them that way though, you can stuff an insert in there I guess. I prefer fitteds and prefolds at night."

Striping BumGenius 3.0 OS cloth diapers? It says to use 1 teaspoon of Dawn Original, and 1/2 a cup of bleach. Won't that take color out of the diapers? I have all different colors, and I don't want them to lose any of the vibrancy. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance! Yeah, I figure they will fade, anything does when you wash in hot water, but I didn't want it to happen prematuraly.

Sonya G replied: "I use Bumgenius 2.0 I was told not to use bleach on the actual diapers, just on the inserts. For the diapers, I use oxy-boost or a like stain remover. (And the diapers eventually do fade, just from regular washing !)"

Mommy to Lauryn and Sydney replied: "No bleach, I agree with the oxy clean also I make sure I do a soak cycle before the hot wash it loosens up any stains."

Do bumGenius 3.0 one size cloth diapers require covers? If you have used these diapers, I am interested in any feedback. I am about 6 weeks along and have long been interested in cloth diapering. This is our first child, though, and my friends are all traditional disposable types. I have read that all cloth diapers require covers, which has been cited in the descriptions of the diapers. These diapers, however, do not make any mention of cover requirements; although the others by bumGenius do. Please let me know about the cover requirement for these and any successful or negative reviews. They are an expensive investment. While most sites offer a 14-day money back guarantee, I have no one to test them on currently and would like to start purchasing them before baby's arrival. Thanks again!!

Ember Halo replied: "no, they don't. i have some. they are a type of pocket diaper. pocket diapers are like all in ones, but have a removable soaker / liner for faster drying time & customizable absorbency. i'm a huge fan of the one-size pocket diapers--they seem the most economical, as they can be used for nearlly the entire time babe is in diapers, and you can customize the absorbency to your little one. not to mention, you don't have to worry about seperate covers! specifics about Bum Genius 3.0: reviews (scroll down)"

**itsevalyntoyouhoe** replied: "I've heard that they aren't that great, but use them if you'd like,, give it a try. I heard they dont hold much, expescially poo... but who knows. Try it out! Good luck!"

Cloth on Bum, Breastmilk in Tum! replied: "Nope, no covers needed! The outer layer is PUL, which is coated with a water-proof coating on the inside, so they don't leak or wick. We LOVE the bumGenius diapers! We have mostly 2.0s, but I am going to get a bunch more 3.0s when our taxes come back. I also love their all in ones - they're trimmer than the pockets and great for when we're out and about. The one size pockets are a great investment, though, since they fit your baby until they are potty trained. Go for it, buy them, I promise you'll love them. I'd have nothing but bumGenius if finances allowed (about half of my stash is prefolds, for the cheap factor). If for some reason you don't like them, you can make almost all of your money back re-selling them on diaperswappers.com!"

belinda replied: "I love my BGs! They do not require a cover, these require stuffing. The one size pockets that you are looking at are the stay-dry inner liner and the waterproof outer layer all in one. They should come with a Cotton Babies one size insert (that's the stuffing). When your baby gets older, you will probably want some more inserts, but it will be a while. I really recommend that you buy a small assortment of diapers at first. I bought fitteds, prefolds and pockets to get started. I ended up liking prefolds the best, and using pockets for going out, just because they're trimmer and cuter. Congratulations on choosing cloth! You'll love it!"

me_just_me replied: "Nope, they don't need a cover which makes them such an easy diaper to use. I have been using them and I absolutely love how easy they are. I used to use prefolds through a diaper service but always had problems with leaks and had to wash covers all day! The nice thing about these pocket diapers is the you can customize the absorbency by adding a doubler. This works great for nighttime. I have hardly ever had any leaks with these diapers - even from runny breastfed poop."

Snow Covered! replied: "Pocket diapers and all-in-one (AIO) diapers do not require covers. bumGenius 3.0 diapers are pocket diapers, so you don't need a cover for them. Flat, pre-fold, fitted and contour diapers require covers. I have some bumGenius 2.0 diapers. They work well. I don't like diapers with aplix (velcro) closures though. I prefer Baby Kanga one-size pocket diapers over the bumGenius. "

Good cloth diapers for after baby outgrows BumGenius 3.0 One-Size? My daughter is only 23 lbs and 28 inches right now at eight months, but she has very thick thighs and a cute, but very round tush. I am 100% sure she will not go up to 35 pounds in these diapers unless she slows down and lengthens out a lot. My hubby has really muscular legs too, so it might just be her body type. I think the diapers will fit her until maybe 30 lbs, just by how wide the velcro is spaced and how low they are getting below her belly button already. Obviously, she won't be potty trained by that point. I like using cloth because they're cheaper in the long run, they work better for her and they're better for the environment. Is there a next size up anyone would recommend that is similar to the BumGenius, with an outer velcro piece and insert? I want to get it figured out and search for good deals before she needs new diapers.

homebirthmoma replied: "My son is the same way! Maybe our baby's will slow down! If not fuzzi bunzz large fits my son I own one of them and he is about the same size as your baby and there is lots of room to grow.I also do the pre folds with a liner in it and wool cover"

Nimi replied: "Good question! We are using the BG 3.0 and our little guy is a "big" guy! My daughter is the tiniest kid around, but our new son is the 100% opposit. Hmmm...."

Melissa ~ Parker's Mommy replied: "I was going to suggest checking out FuzziBunz as well. I mainly do various WAHM AIO brands but I do have a few FuzziBunz and my son also has very thick thighs and they seem to fit him much better than some of the others I have tried. So it might be worth while to buy one and see how it does on your daughter. Also, you never know she may very well slow down in her growth. My son was growing so quickly and everyone kept saying it would taper off, but I didn't really believe them, so I bought everything in much bigger sizes, clothes included. Well, he became really mobile, and has now gained just a few ounces in three months time and everything I bought for the summer is too big. So that might not happen with your daughter, esp. if it is more of a build issue, but still keep it in mind."

~Mrs. Ferrari~♥my babies! replied: "I have a couple organic fitted one size diapers from Swaddlebees. They are REALLY easy (just like an AIO except you pop a cover on top), and the velour is VERY soft and stretchy. They run very big too!! Another option is prefolds. I found them easier than I expected, and very cheap. I don't even use pins or Snappis, just lay them in a diaper cover! Thirsties diaper covers run quite large. My 2.5 year old daughter only wears diapers at night and is about 31 lbs; she can still use the medium and large covers! Fuzzi Bunz large says it goes up to 45 lbs! I haven't tried them personally, but the reviews seem good!&&cm_mmc=cse-_-googlebase-_-null-_-null&cvsfa=912&cvsfe=2&cvsfp=FB-016 Good luck girl! I understand your dilemma, since I really love cloth too!!"

What kind of detergent do you wash Bum Genius 3.0 diapers in? I am new to cloth diapers. I just got my daughter some BumGenius 3.0 diapers and was wondering what I kind of detergent I need to wash them in? I have some sports detergent...is it ok to wash them in that? Can I use it every time? I have very hard water...do I need to add baking soda or vinegar? If so how much? If I get stains on them what can I use (other than sunlight) to remove them? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to learn to do this right.

The new Mrs. J. Brown replied: "use the detergent you use to wash her clothes. you don't want her skin to break out from anything new."

Kate F replied: "I used regular detergent and I would put vinegar in a "downy ball". Good luck"

MHW replied: "Don't use baby detergent, soap, or free and clear detergents. Don't use fabric softeners or dryer sheets. I use tide. A lot of websites recommend Allen's Naturally. To remove stains sunning is best. I have read that putting a little lemon juice on the stain before sunning helps. Don't use bleach. To help keep stains from setting, run a COLD rinse or soak first. Wash on HOT. Make sure the diapers are rinsed very well. And don't use a lot of detergent, it can build up in the inserts and cause them to stink."

dKm replied: "I've used Charlie's Soap (charliesoap.com) to wash my bumgenius diapers. I like is so much that I now use it on all of our clothing. The clothes come out so soft that I don't need fabric softener. When ever I wiped my glasses before with a shirt or whatever, there was always smear marks on the lenses. Now, with charlie's soap, they wipe perfectly clean. That tells me that there not any residue on the clothes. Residue will affect the absorbency and waterproofness of your diapers. Also, remember to line dry the outer covering to help them last longer! If you line dry, the sun gets all of the "stains" out. One cycle cold rinse, add Charlie's soap, one cycle hot wash with cold rinse. Highly recommended!!"

xl123 replied: "I love Allen's Naturally. I tried Charlie's, but it didn't work for me. I had trouble getting it to rinse out completely, so we had problems with odors and rashes. But I know it's been great for some people. I have a cousin who swears by Seventh Generation. If you add soda, it's pretty important to use vinegar in the rinse."

bumGenius 3.0 one size Organic vs. "regular"? I've decided I want to CD my little one when s/he arrives and I have purchased bumGenius diapers. I got 32 of the new bright colors, but I originally planned on getting the "regular" version as opposed to the organic version. However, I ran into a deal where I could buy the organic at almost the same price, so I figured I would go with that instead. Now I am wondering if I made the right choice? The organic diapers do not require inserts as they are not pockets, but they also only fit small, medium, and large whereas the "regular" fit extra small thru large. Both fit the same weight bracket though. I might just sell some of the batch and then purchase "regulars" so I can still have the extra small fit for the newborn age. The organic version also received a lower rating score on diaperpin.com. Those of you that use bumGenius, do you use the regular and/or the organic? Is there a preference (one better than the other)? Can I add a prefold to the organic diapers if I have leak troubles or no? Thanks in advance! Would the bG's 2.0 in the newborn size be a better idea than getting the bG's one-size?? Thanks for the kissaluvs size 0 recommendation! I will look into that. If I'm already spending the money, might as well get something that will work!

loreo replied: "Kudos for CDing! I made the same choice with my baby, and am not finding it time consuming, tedious etc. and my girl has yet to have any sort of diaper rash :) We use half prefolds and half the bumGenius 3.0 regulars. I therefore cannot comment on the organics, but can tell you about our experience with the regulars. I like that they are pockets, so that we can easily double stuff for overnight. The regulars didn't fit her super well when she was a newborn (born 8 lb 3 oz), even when adjusted to the 'xtra small' setting (which is just the small snap setting with the tabs overlapping), but were great starting around 3-4 weeks. So, I wouldn't bother buying regular bumGenius diapers if your concern is fit when your baby is born. We love the regular bumGenius 3.0s. They hardly ever leak (and when they do, it's because we didn't do them up properly and left a hole by one of her legs), are easy to wash and come with two inserts. They have held up well for the two months we have been using them. The best diaper system I found for when she was a newborn was a Kissaluvs size 0 with a Bummis super whisper wrap cover, but this would be an expensive investment to buy in addition to your bumGenius diapers. Hope this helps - sorry I couldn't address the organic vs. regular in more detail."
