Is there a safety device for the bottom of bunk-bed steps? My little girls are18 months old and 5. We have bought them a set of bunk beds with an safety rail and bumper on the bottom bunk for the little one. The first day we got the beds the 18mth old climbed the stairs, luckily we were in the room at the time having just finished building the beds. Now I have resorted to putting her back in her cot which she is really getting too big for (not to mention strong!) Does anyone know of a safety device that would stop her from being able to climb the steps, while also keeping them clear for my eldest daughter?? any suggestions would help!

Friendly Stranger.. replied: "Unless you can find some sort of blockade for the steps then I would say that there is nothing available to keep your child from climbing. The only other suggestions I have is to either move the steps if they are removable or make sure that you keep an eye out for your younger child. I would first find out if you can remove the steps. I know that some bunk beds allow you to move the ladder out of the way. If that is so, then try having it only accessible to your 5 year old or only accessible to you. Secondly, try monitoring your child. If you always know where your child is in that room and keep an eye out, then its not likely they will attempt a climb."

I am painting my Step 2 plastic bunk bed?? I recently purchased an used Step 2 Bunk bed for my boys. I cleaned it,but there are some visible marks that wouldn't come off so I have decided to paint it. (This is the hard plastic by Step 2 similar to Little tikes like the outdoor toys). I am planning on using the Krylon Fusion paint and I am wondering if you have any suggestions to painting this or if there would be a better paint??

dartiator63 replied: "I think that is the best product you can get over the counter. Here is a special order product that you can look at as well."

otayman1 replied: "if you want more color choices you can paint with spray plastic primer then paint it with any spray paint they carry.lowes and home depot sell it in the spray paint section."

How to make a bed canopy for my kids bunk bed? I want to make a canopy for my daughters bunk bed to give her a more cozy feel up on the top bunk. How can I make it ... step by step? I know you need a hook and a hoop and fabric but how do you put it together? Or are there any othe techniques? Or anywhere to buy cheap??

William B replied: "use 1/2 inch or 3/8 " pvc pipe, either bow it or add 45deg fittings to get the bow effect, drill a hole in the side at an angle or or on top, of each post about 4 inches deep for the 1/2 "pvc or 3/8" pipe to fit in, sew the fabric with a seam at each side for the pipe to fit in, pvc pipe is about $4. a stick 10 ft long."

Richard C replied: "Consider a fine denier ( yarn diameter ) nylon or a rayon with a lot of 'drape'.A really cool trick is to hang a parachute from the ceiling."

How do you make the bed for the top of a bunk bed or loft? We just set up a bunk bed for my six year old. We can't figure out an easy way to make the bed. One full side is against a wall. Do we need to keep a step ladder handy or can anyone help?

Wise Guy! replied: "As less often as you have to."

deonssweety replied: "I've tried many things....however, the easiest is to let my five year old do it!!!! Good luck!"

**CLAYMORE** replied: "lol there is no easy just let your kid make it and tell them what a great job they did"

dianesaunders2003 replied: "hello there, having bunk beds for my kids, i of course have fitted sheets on the mattress or pad, and i use blankets that do not have to be tucked in, they just drape across the bed very nicely. they should hang just enough to hide your mattress. and your six year old can make his own bed while on his knees from the head of the bed, just show him how."

Does anyone know how to make or find info on how to make yacht steps, not quite a ladder but sloping steps.? Wooden wide steps on a slope often seen on yachts or library's maybe even bunk beds?

DIY Doc replied: "I may be totally off about this, but are you thinking of the sides/supports, being a curve/arch? No question, it's possible to make them; perhaps easier than standard house steps. Admittedly I haven't been invited to board too many Yachts, and can't recall seeing that style in any library I've been in...also it seems the idea of Bunk Beds is the conservation of space. "Sloping" if it's what I envision, would hardly be space saving. If however my vision is correct; you select the degree/angel/curve of the slope. Create that from base to height that you need; using Plywood sheet, to accomplish the sides in a single piece. Obviously if they are for a Yacht, the material should at the very least be the best Marine worthy material you can find. My thought would require a router and templates or guides for the router. On the INSIDE of each side piece you'll determine a proper and comfortable tread height/spacing; then GROOVE the sides with the router after accounting for the arch/curve and that each tread will be level and perpendicular to the base of the side pieces. The groove need not be so deep as to degrade the support of the sides, relating to each tread,,,because you'll add support cleats under each side of every tread. You might also add support at each tread, THROUGH the sides, into the tread end cuts. If these are to be involved around water, I'd use Mahogany, or some such for the treads,,,rounded/radiused both front and back. Then everything finished with as many coats of marine varnish as you equate to durability. Excuse me if I'm off base; but I might just have found/borrowed a new Niche market. Steven Wolf"

CHARLES F replied: "If you look at the stairs in your home forget the back uprights and under each step edge left&right screw a batton support for each run , you will need to fit one back support to prevent side collapse and each step must have none slip rubber fitted to prevent slipping when wet . second choice buy some caravan steps 2/3 or4 step ."

Dad, its so bad, there's blood everywhere. The bunk beds were a terrible idea.? How did u like Step Brothers?

Andy J replied: "LOVED IT!!! Hahahahahahahaha"

step-daughter loosening screws on bunk bed, should i tell her father? my step-daughter is 9 1/2 years old. my son just turned 5. we recently bought a bunk bed for them to share when she comes every other weekend, so she doesn't have to share a room with the baby anymore. the whole weekend i kept telling her not to play on/with the bunk bed, as my son is not allowed to either. this morning as i was cleaning up the room, i found a screw on the floor that belonged to the bunk bed. i found out where it came from and put it back...then i found out that all the other screws holding the top bunk in place were loosened. i know that she was the one to do it, b/c my son can't reach some of them to loosen them. i find this very dangerous. and disrespectful of our property. this isn't the first time she's tried to wreck something in my house/of my son's. i want to tell my husband, but anytime i try to tell him anything that she's done that's dangerous or breaking our rules, he says i'm attacking her. and yet he gives my son shit for even the slightest thing. i just don't know what to do anymore. she just keeps hurting my son emotionally, and she's hit and kicked him before (and denied it even though i saw it), and i'm afraid it's going to get more serious. and i know that my husband isn't going to take these fears for my son's safety from her seriously and is going to get mad at me and defend her.

stupidae86man replied: "Yes."

gvaporcarb replied: "Do you have a camcorder ? Could you at least document these incidents ? Is there anyone else in the family that you could show this to ? You need to do something, because you seem to have a budding Lizzie Borden on your hands ! As to the Bunk bed, that is serious ! Go to a Hardware Store, and get some sort of specialized Glue that will make it impossible to loosen those Screws, and tighten them down yourself, then when the glue dries try to loosen them.If she's smart enough to do this, she may try to poison his food as well !"

Savanna <3 replied: "Well, it must be emotionally and mentally confusing and depressing that she has a little brother and she might not get all the attention that she needs/wants/used to. She might feel that if "she got rid of him" then she would be the "#1" again. Has she watched any movies or read any books that might have provoked these ideas? A normal 9 year old would probably not think of doing the bunk bed screws by herself, she had to get it from someone or someplace. What you might want her to do is ask her to draw a picture on how she feels because most likely she doesn't want to talk about it, and you might not want to be judge her so harshly considering she is only a nine year old. Also, when she is drawing the picture (she could also write a story about how she feels but in other peoples bodies) you might not want to be in the room. Also, it might help if she talks to her father about how she feels. She will come around and warm up to her brother. Hope this helped :)"

VoiceofCommonSense replied: "If he doesn't do anything to her, then you are forced to. He gives your son crap, why doesn't it work both ways? I like the idea of a camcorder or pictures. Something to get proof of the little vixen doing what she does. She knows daddy believes her, and she can do as she pleases. Also, by him doing that, he doesn't trust your word. By saying you're attacking her, he saying you're full of it, and making it up. You sure this was the right guy to marry? A guy who doesn't trust you? Sounds like you need a serious talk with him on trust issues too."

Quincys Mama replied: "YES you def need to talk to him. She could seriously hurt your son! You need to have a serious talk with her father. And he needs to have a serious talk with her! If not then do it your self. You may be the step parent but you are still in a place of authority. Do not let her hurt your son again..and who knows what she could be doing to the baby when no one is looking...."

Yellow replied: "maybe its just a shitty bunk bed no off."

Jennifer replied: "Bottom line is your husband should believe you regarding mis-behavior of your step daughter and you should believe him about mis-behavior of your son. You are the adults and you make the rules - and those rules need to be the same for everyone in the house. You and your husband need to sit down and discuss disciplining both children. Yes you are the step mother - but you should have some power over disciplining a child in your house. What your step daughter did was dangerous and if your husband doesn't react and discipline your step daughter then he is being WAY too lenient with her and this needs to be discussed calmly and rationally between the both of you."

where can i find a huge bed? I am looking for a a queen, preferably kind sized bed that is huge, I mean you have to have a small step ladder to get into. Does anyone know what I am talking about? I was looking at Paul Bunyun beds but they all look like bunk beds and thats not what I am looking for. Thank you.

Richard W replied: "go to a place that sells beds, even if they don't have one, many times they can order in whatever you want. no store can stock everything."

groovergabe replied: "my place right now"

sunseaandpiracy replied: "Check this site out, maybe it helps"

toddk57@sbcglobal.net replied: "is you talking about an queen size matress that would fit doubble bunk beds well according to they carry those sets complete with boxspring & matress for both! before yourself buys take an measurement first to determine the sizes of each one ok?"
