I am buying a new digital camera. Is it worth the extra money for the higher optical zoom? 12x vs 4x? I am probably going to buy the Canon Powershot. One version has 6.0 megapixels with a 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. The other choice has 7.1 megapixels, but lower optical & digital zooms. How do I choose?

CJoshuaV replied: "Digital zoom is worthless. You can accomplish the same thing in Photoshop by enlarging the picture. (I recommend disabling digital zoom as soon as you get the camera so that you don't accidentally engage it.) Higher optical zoom is often worth the money, since sometimes you can't get as close as you might like to your subject. You might want to check the link below to compare various cameras you are considering. I really like the one I linked a lot."

rick o replied: "Absoluty YES! I have an Olympus with a 10x optical amd 3x digital. I'm always useing the zoom. You know that bird is a little far away.... Not any more. For my useage zoom is more important than megapixels. It sparks creativity."

rsimons56 replied: "I agree with CJoshua, digital zoom can be accomplished outside the camera. How much you can zoom does depend on megapixels of the original. Therefore, the higher the MP of the original the more capabilities you have in post processing a photo. How far you intend to go is up to you. I have a Canon Digital Rebel at 6.0mp and it amazes me at how far I can zoom on a good shot in Adobe Photoshop and still get a clear image. So, unless you are going to make huge prints, the more optical zoom is the way to go. There wouldn't be that much difference between 6.0 and 7.1mp."

Baiju replied: "Never go for Digital Zoom. Its better to choose 6MP with the 12x Optical Zoom(Canon S3 IS). If you really need extra MP, Sony DSC H5 (7.2MP,12x Optical Zoom) is another choice for you.I would suggest Canon S3 IS.Leave that one with lower optical zoom."

horrorfan replied: "it depends what you want the camera for . the 6 mega pixel with the 12x digital zoom might be the best around for you as if you need the extra zoom you will have it. i have found 6mp is god for both landscape and portrait photos."

What does "Digital camera has 10x optical and 4x digital zoom" mean to the camera user? Is that ENOUGH camera for me? I would like to do close ups. It's a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Digital Camera. How good is that camera?

neodracolith replied: "Optical zoom is the magnification you get by moving the lens. Digital zoom is where it takes the picture and zooms in on it electronically, like the zoom when you look at a picture on your computer."

moonbeam replied: "The optical zoom works well for when you want to enlarge a picture. The digital zoom doesn't seem to enlarge as well. It pixulates the picture and it becomes blury. A 10x optical is pretty good. Mine is only 3 and does a nice job for my use."

Is the Canon PowerShot A640 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom a good camera? For approximately $337.83 and the fact that it comes with a free memory card, what do you think? 10 MP, 4x Optical Zoom? Good for the price? Nice camera?

Kosmo replied: "I'm not sure but I would recommend going to and and do a search for that specific model. I use these sites and they have a lot of good info, consumer reviews, and pricing. You might also check the pc magazine website. They review cameras as well. Good luck"

Luis G replied: "Yes it is a great little camera. It also has a stabilizer for when you use the LCD screen. It has a view finder also."

sweet_megs83 replied: "I think that is a great deal........I have the powershot 450 and i love it...... it is a rockin camera and for that price i would say hell yeah"

chrisaaaaaaaaaaaa replied: "thats an unbelievable deal, i just bought a Cannon 8 MP 4x zoom for $325....for only 40 more dollars yours will be worth it"

Dr. Sam replied: "Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for baing a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I'd buy it myself. With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. "

Chuckie replied: "That's a great deal. Owners also gave it good reviews and high ratings:"

sm replied: "my friend has a 7mp canon that looks the same, the 640 has a bigger screen. and that's one fantastic camera! a solid camera by a solid company, you can't go wrong. I sell this camera at my work for $485 CDN, I think I should go over the border and get one! But watch out for the memory card, each 10mp pic will be 5MB, so a 512MB memory card will hold 100 photos. I would recommend taking 10mp photos and shrinking them later on your computer, no point getting a 10mp camera and taking 4mp pics"

Do I need 4x optical zoom (digital camera)? I'm buying a camera, and my sister said that 3x optical zoom's just not enough, but I'm just getting a point-and-shoot for pretty general use, mostly for my high school yearbook staff. I know I'd use it sometimes, but is it worth trying to search to find and pay the extra money for? I guess what I'm actually asking is Is 3x enough?

Max replied: "no my camera has 3x and is fantastic. sisters were put on this earth to annoy and annoy and annoy."

yeah.okay. replied: "I have a Canon Powershot with a 4x zoom and sometimes I actually wish I had a little more zoom. It's good for everyday pictures, but I don't think I would want to have less than a 4x zoom."

Is 4x optical zoom good on a sony digital camera? I want to but this camera but as it's expensive i want to make sure the zoom is good. I don't know what 4x optical zoom means so can someone tell me if it's good or not? :) It's not for taking pictures of nature, i want it because i have a few concerts coming up and i want close up footage because i'm sitting very far away.

fhotoace replied: "The optical zoom is the actual optical focal length from wide angle to telephoto. 3x is the standard, better cameras have optical zooms from 5x to 20x. This is important to know, since P&S cameras are not able to interchange lenses like a DSLR can. You need to know what subjects you intend to shoot to know if the focal lengths of the lens on the camera you are choosing are enough. If you want to shoot wildlife, you will need a camera with at least a 10x optical zoom"

Wiz replied: "Optical zoom gives u zoom with less blur than the digital zoom we have a kodak with 10 x optical zoom and get better quality pics its the easyshare zd710 and was only £99 and as we already had the easyshare doc we can print instant pics at weddings special occassions"

draytondon replied: "Optical zoom is the facility to get closer to the subject without distortion to the picture quality, digital zoom will pixelate when applied. 4 x Optical zoom is a good standard but if your looking to take nature shots, or be some distance from your subject you will need a larger optical zoom, Fuji do a nice 10 X optical zoom camera. If you intend to crop or enlarge you will need to use optical zoom over digital also. Good luck"

ChaoRingmeister replied: "Its an average amount of zoom. The Zeiss branded lenses on the Sony cameras can sometimes be better than their equivalent Sony version. So watch out for that too."

Can I get a digital camera with 8 megapixels and 4x optical zoom for under $200? I don't want to purchase the digital camera online, so can i get a camera with 8 mps and 4x optical zoom for $200 or less at an actual retailer?

missourim43 replied: "Canon A540"

bolly replied: "Yes of course, but is depend on the maker."

the_next_top_model_26 replied: "Yes, but if you don't want a crappy one, start looking now at like Target or Circuit City. They have good deals on some pretty nice cameras like the one you are describing."

Does anyone know where I can buy a small digital camera with more than a 4X optical zoom? I am looking for a small digital camera with more than a 4x optical zoom

Dr. Sam replied: "I think what you mean is what cameras should you be looking at. Here are a few. ULTRA COMPACT Kodak V610 - 10X Nikon Coolpix S10 - 10X Ricoh Caplio R6 - 7X Samsung L77 - 7X COMPACT Canon Powershot A710-IS - 6X Canon Powershot G7 - 6X Canon Powershot TX1 - 10X Casio Exilim EX-V7 - 7X Canon Powershot S3-IS - 12X These are common models and you can find them in most "Big Box" stores like Circuit City, Best Buy, etc., or you can order them on-line from B&H Photo and many others. B&H Photo is available through a link at Yahoo! Shopping, or at 1-800-622-4987. See also"

lare replied: "the fuji s5000 series features 10x zoom."

Vincent replied: "Canon PowerShot 710 IS has 6x zoom but it's an older model and about to be replaced I think... Maybe you should hold out for that replacement? Probably end of the summer... Canon PowerShot S5 has 12x zoom.. Nikon S4 and S10 have 10x zoom Fujifilm FinePix also has several models with bigger zooms, the S5700 has nice specs... and 10x zoom What is important to know is that the zoom is what makes the camera big, the bigger the zoom, the bigger the camera... Except for that, You can also have a smaller optical chip, which allows for a smaller zoom with the same x as a bigger zoom with a bigger chip... bigger chips generally mean better pictures."

Irretable replied: "There's a SUPER nice camera made by Panasonic, the DMC-TZ3, that has a 10x zoom, 3" LCD, optical image stabilization and 7.2MP... and it's still small enough to fit in your pocket."

David B replied: "There are a few here that fit the bill "
