Can you use an electric toothbrush on a 1 year old? The only electric tooth brushes I've seen for sale for kids start at 3 years old, so is it bad to use an electric tooth brush on a child younger then 3? My 1 year old loves my husbands electric toothbrush but i don't want her to use it as i'm worried it will do her harm. Some people are getting the idea she doesn't like to have her teeth brushed with an electric toothbrush, she loves it thats the problem, she will stay perfectly still and have her teeth brushed with one but a normal toothbrush she isn't keen on. Lazy? the tooth brush doesn't go in and clean your teeth while you stand there it's no the jetsons!!! LOL

globalwarming replied: "you can if you like to torcher the kid"

versantly replied: "the age ranges are often for liability purposes. if she uses the toothbrush with supervision there shouldn't be a problem. she doesn't need toothpaste at this age, though. kudos to you for having a child so interested in her oral health."

sophieb replied: "why on earth would you want to use an electric toothbrush on a 1 year old? And why would anyone even let a 3 year old use anything electric that they could electricute themselves. Wow, this world is sure training kids to be lazy."

az2 replied: "your right. better buy her toothbrushes with lovely designs to discourage her from using elec toothbrush. her gums are too delicate for the stuff"

JOHN B replied: "Although I have never encountered anyone who brushed their one-year old's teeth with an electric toothbrush, I tend to think you are a bit over-emphasizing dental health at that age. Also, you should consider that a child's mouth and teeth are sensitive, especially when they are teething and getting their new teeth. It might be very painful for a youngster under one; You are not the one experiencing the discomfort--the child is. Unless there is a specific medical or dental reason, an electric toothbrush should be used only by older children and adults, who can stop, or lighten up on the brushing if it gets too painful."

Pete K replied: "If the only electric toothbrush you can find that's made for kids says it's for 3 yrs.-old and up, I'd say that you had better not try one one your daughter until she's at least 18 months past her first walking day. What's that old saying? Ah, yes! "Better safe than sorry.""

Joycee replied: "No don't teach them to be lazy at one...teach them to brush properly with a real toothbrush"

BC replied: "It is very likely that she's teething and the massaging effect of the toothbrush helps. Depending on her development, 1 yr is when she ought to be getting some of her first few teeth in (give or take some months). The toothbrush itself won't have any adverse effect on the gums. The age has more to do with the toothpaste - as mentioned earlier - your child doesn't need to be using flouridated toothpaste at this age. But she's not actually brushing her teeth, so don't worry about it. Having said that (and this will sound stupid, but it is legitimate) make sure your husband is in good shape dentally speaking. Babies get the bacteria for decay from their parents, so whoever shares it will inevitably pass on bacteria to her. Its no big deal, but make sure your husband doesn't have any large, untreated cavities."

What's the youngest age to use an electric toothbrush? I've just bought my first electric toothbrush and think it's fantastic. So much so that I'm thinking of one for the kids too, but I'm concerned they may be too young. Some of these brushes are on sale with a recommended age of 3+. My children are 4 and 5, but as they're still learning to brush manually, is it wise to stop this process and give them the electric brush? Or should I hold off a few years?

systemofanalias replied: "72"

Nicole replied: "Maybe if you let them use an electric toothbrush you could supervise them while they brush their teeth so they could feel like they're "big kids". But if I were you I wouldn't let them use it alone, but that's just my opinion."

Marymiss replied: "I would wait till they are at least 7-8. They need to learn how to brush correctly first. And using an electric brush the wrong way could hurt their gums."

groovy_surf_chic99 replied: "id say about 13 or when they are going through puberty. when the children are young their teeth are still developing and need to be brushed manually as doing it by hand always wins. Hope i helped <3 groovy_surf_chic99 xxoo"

Narrelle''x replied: "Well my mother gave me an electric toothbrush when i was younger, it was like a princess one, and my teeth are pretty much fine, it didn't hurt or anything. I think as soon as they can brush on there own they can use them in my opinion."
