Why does my lower back hurt more after getting a memory foam mattress and how can I fix it? I just bought a $1500 memory foam mattress and now my lower back is hurting even more than before. I can barely get up in the morning or get out of a low chair (like a car seat) some days. What could be going on here and how can I fix it. I dont have health insurance and am kinda broke so a doctor does not seem to be in my near future.

rebel g replied: "You could have blown discs which is a serious condition. Dr is a must at this point. If the rupture protudes too far into your spinal column it can paralyze you."

alex m replied: "muscle memory... melt the foam down into a ball and go kick it around the field for a while every day....you'll be sleeping on the floor which might be better for you anyway."

shannon h replied: "As rebel g said, you could have bulged or ruptured discs in your back as I do. You should really go to a doctor before it gets worse. My back specialist said for someone with back problems it is best to sleep on a firm mattress. He suggested to me that I put a sheet of ply-wood in between my mattress and box springs. Since I got a firmer mattress and put the wood under it I sleep better and don't hurt half as much as I did, especially in the mornings. Good Luck!"

gy650 replied: "Since memory foam is "conforming", as compared to "push-back supportive", perhaps another type foam configuration will work . . research links:"

are memory foam mattress toppers good ? been looking at 3cm thick memory foam mattress toppers but don't know how good it will be on a sprung mattress.

eco_hard replied: "amazing, we have one, we have a crap mattress and the foam on top adds that bit of extra comfort, the only problem is getting out of bed in a morning!"

ijcoffin replied: "It will be comfortable, keeping in mind that memory foam gets hot as you sleep on it. It reflects your body heat."

Rosey 2ooo replied: "I know a couple of peeps who have them and they say they are brilliant. The mattress moulds to your body shape to support where it needs supporting. A well supported body means less pain through sleeping in an awkward position."

snorky998 replied: "YES oh YES Oh God, yes."

jwood replied: "hotter than hell but if you are cold natured it will be right your alley...good luck"

Is the memory foam just as good as a brand new mattress? I am in desperate need of a new mattress, but unfortunately can not afford a quality mattress at this time. Would a memory foam mattress pad be the best option at this point? Can anyone recommend a decent one as well? Any info is greatly appreciated.

sammer003 replied: "There are cheaper memory foam mattresses available, phone the matress stores. We got one for $400.00, and is great. A pad is not bad, but don't work as great b/c they still depend on the old mattress, and would only be so-so. The main brands are Obus Forme, tempur-pedic, sealy."

Sadie replied: "Memory foam helps you sleep great. I have a memory foam pillow and that has improved the quality of my sleep. ;) try these: the target and kohls are better in my opinion..of course you should read about it and see which one suits you best...but they will improve the quality of your sleep dramatically! good luck. ;)"

Are the memory foam mattress toppers as good as getting the entire mattress made out of memory foam? I see one on Kohl's website that's $200 for a 4" queen size memory foam topper. To buy the entire mattress made out of foam would cost hundreds more so I just want to know if anyone has had success with the topper. Thanks!!!

wsne replied: "We bought one at Sams Club but not that thick. Is comfortable, but can't say it is as good as a complete mattress."

Tom replied: "I have to concur with wsne. 200$ is a bit much for that anyway, the one my girlfriend bought us was 100$. Is it as good as the full mattress? I won't even pretend it is. Is it pretty f-ing comfortable? Yes! Shop around a bit more, try Target. Kohl's is a bit expensive with housewares for some ungodly reason."

Doug replied: "If your mattress has lost its support and you are trying to fix it with a topper, won't work. It will however take a mattress that was purchased a little too on the firm side and soften it up. Toppers are best if they are two inches or thicker. Density and ILD or IFD is important, cost is less important. Tempur Pedic Toppers are the measuring stick by which everything is compared. They are not cheap but they are the best. You may even want to look at the idea of a latex topper. I prefer a mattress to a topper. "

My friend has back issues from sleeping on her stomach. Is there a better mattress for her than memory foam? I have a friend that wakes up in excruciating pain on her left side, probably due to mattress issues. She usually sleeps on her stomach. It seems to be the new, expensive "memory foam" mattress that is giving the most trouble, and I was wondering if anyone with similar back issues (and similar sleeping positions!) had recommendations to eliminate the pain.

memory foam mattress toppers any good for bad backs? any doctors or physios know if memory foam mattress toppers any good for bad backs? i have four slipped discs and been off work three months now and not getting better, i bought one of theses two months ago and wondering if doing more harm than good? also i walk about 3 or 4 hours a day EVERY day im 37 and wondering am i setting myself up for hip probs wen older? am i wearing it away quicker than someone who sits in front tv all day?

Echo O replied: "I'd say they're a mixed bag. As a side sleeper with horrible shoulder problems, my topper is the only way I can sleep at all. But when it comes to my spinal curvature, it has gotten noticeably worse over the last three years since I started using the memory foam. But the thing is, scoliosis only ever does get worse as you age so I can't gauge whether it's been augmented or just following the same course it would have followed on a regular bed. I'd say if you're dealing with slipped discs on an otherwise properly shaped back, the memory foam will do you a lot of good. Just don't rely on it. And hopefully you actually get to see a doctor on a regular basis to monitor things. As far as using your body, that usually does you good. Look at Jack LaLanne. He still works out two hours a day at 94 years old. If anything proves that proper exercise does a lot more good than harm, it's that guy."

Where can i buy a good value memory foam mattress topper? I have a budget of about £40 and I want a single memory foam mattress topper with 3 inch + of depth, please answer even if it is over budget. Thanks in advance.

How good is the memory foam mattress pad? i hardly sleep at night and i am thinking of buying a foam mattress pad how good are they. will it help me sleep better at night. would it be better for my back. i always wake up with back pain, and neck pain.

Sanjay B replied: "my girlfriend and i have one on our bed, and for us regarding back and neck pain . . .it's bloody awesome ! ! ! . . . oh and it feels good too."

francis s replied: "i stayed at a hotel with these beds, they felt great, very very comfortable, but the foam seemed to reflect all my body heat and it was too hot to sleep all night"

tipper replied: "I have one and like it. To Francis S. that was a plastic mattress cover on the hotel room bed. They are HOT and terrible!"

CitizenX. replied: "I had one and didn't like it. I was always sweating even when it was cool. I have a spine injury and have found a good cheap Aerobed is the best for me. I've had it for a few years and love it. I can adjust it to how my back is feeling every night. And that makes a big difference to me."

The First Dragon replied: "I have one and it is extremely comfortable. You have to get a good brand I guess; some people are complaining they are hot. Mine is actually cooler than a regular mattress in hot weather. I have a memory foam pillow and it feels much cooler than a regular pillow; it's very nice."

Gort replied: "Only YOU can determine if a memory foam topper suits your personal comfort preferences. Bergad Sensus Sleep Aid"

Bedding Guy replied: "Hello, A mattress pad is good if you have a firm or medium firm mattress that is flat all the way across the top surface. Many older innerspring mattresses get a dip in the middle over time. There is no remedy for a bed like this. The dip will always cause your spine to be out of proper allignment which will cause, discomfort, pain, and prevent you from sleeping. Having said that, if you have a firm, flat mattress, then a latex or memory foam mattress pad can really help. The idea of a foam mattress pad is that it conforms to your body, supports gentle upward curves like your lower back and neck, evenly distributes the weight of your body, and reduces painful pressure points on your hips, shoulders, knees and elbows. If you mattress is not firm or flat, or dips in the middle, then you will need a memory foam mattress, instead of just a pad, to get the proper help. Memory foam toppers and mattresses are the king when it comes to comfort. They help your body get in a neutral spine postion: This relieves back and neck pain, which in turn increases comfort and allows you to sleep. I had the same sleepless experience that you are having, due to an old injury. Then I started sleeping on a memory foam mattress a few years ago and feel great again."

Is a memory foam mattress and pillow worth the price tag in order to get a good nights sleep? (or other?)? I currently own a double bed and mattress, and i NEVER have a nice nights sleep. Im off to university soon and will be moving to a single bed. I was wondering if buying a memory foam matress and memory foam pillow would be beneficial? As i really cant be doing with waking up half way through sleeping because of discomfort in university! Thanks

Hope replied: "You may want to try a less expensive air-bed for a comfortable mattress before investing in the memory foam mattress. Another alternative, you can add a memory foam topper to a lousy cheap mattress to get an amazingly comfortable bed. Go for the 3 or 4 inch topper. You can do either the air bed or the topper for under $100. I was pleased to find a camping air mattress in twin size that was just as comfortable as my bed at home. It was a Coleman, and I believe it was for less than $40. Found it in the sporting goods section at Walmart."

Dianne replied: "Just remember any foam mattress is hot and the denser it is, the hotter it is. That's why hospitals stopped using them."

Tara replied: "They are warm, but they are definitely worth the price in my opinion. Do your research first though because not all memory foam mattresses are created equal. Density of the foam is a big deal and so is the number of inches of memory foam on top of the structural foam. For anyone over 180#, I would recommend 6 inches of memory foam, Otherwise 4-4.5 inches. Many are 2-3 inches and that's just not worth the bother. Don't go with a density rating of less than 5 lbs. Many are as low as 2-3 lbs. And if the person you talk to doesn't know, then it is probably low and they didn't even know enough to get the right thing. After you do your research, do product price research online. I live on the east coast and got a king size 5.5 lb density 6 inches from California for $550 including shipping. I've had it for 4 years now and it has held up 100%, unlike a friend that got a brand name. We got ours on ebay BTW. Take your time. I didn't find mine for a couple of weeks, but then the deal came along. I used to toss all night. Now I don't move. It is that worth it!"

s t replied: "your being smart by putting some of your money in your mattress instead of the usual "who has the cheapest blah blah blah"..... A good new mattress is good to have no matter if its foam, or plush traditional mattress,,but make sure you use a good bedframe and new matching box spring so it wont sag in middle,,, and dont drink caffine after three or four in afternoon. You can just get a basic traditional spring loaded set for about $250, then add a topper,,,Thats what i have and love it. Try to find a mattress you can flip also. Good luck in school....I just finished an accounting degree only to find out there are no jobs for grads,,only accountants with 3-5 years experiance...so now i signed up for nursing."

hi am looking for a good memory foam mattress topper? hi am looking for a double memory foam mattress topper, i have never had any dealings with memory foam so it would be great if anyone can give me there thoughts on memory foam and what they think of it and of course where to buy what brand ect many thanks. i am from the uk

becomingpro replied: "Check Tuesday Morning if you have it in the UK? They have good deals. Look for stores that have mark downs on great brands. Your best bet is there."

Gia replied: "Tempur is a well-known brand for memory foam mattress toppers. But I bought my memory foam mattress from - they sell a brand called New Horizon. Its quality is comparable to Tempur's while the price is much cheaper!"

'Er indoors!! replied: "Be careful, as memory foam has become more popular, there are unscrupulous dealers, selling inferior quality foam. I bought a 4" topper from this firm, and found th quality to be good. I bought mine from this firm, and found th quality of foam to be pretty good. If you can afford it, go for a 4" as it offers the best support and comfort. Most toppers are 2" which I don't think are deep enough to offer the support you need. Once you have bought your topper, you may find regular sheets don't fit. I buy deep pocketted sheets from a firm called Northern Nights, which is part of Q.V.C. They are always made from egyptian cotton, and are made bigger to accommodate extra depth on your mattress."

Jenny replied: "Memory foam mattress is known to provide better support to your body as the visco elastic foam conforms to the curve of your body when you lie on it. Tempur-Pedic is a well known name producing memory foam mattresses, but it is rather expensive. This site has more information on memory foam mattress which may help you."
