Would lowering speed reduce the price of gas and be an attack on terrorist and others making big money on oil? In 1965 a display at the US Army Transportation School featured a new vehicle for all government agencies. This vehicle used water as a fuel. Over 1000 vehicles that use water as a fuel are on order today for the Army. A Fox News video clips below relates how a Ford Escort required 4 ounces of water for a 100 mile trip. It will take several years to get these vehicle on the market, but in the mean time we can save 15.6 % on fuel use by driving and flying just 20% slower. That will also save at least that percentage of lives on the highway and help stop the "war." The next link mentions the first patent for using water as a fuel dated 1935. The link above confirms the 1935 patent for using water as a fuel. While not a success at the time, this early vehicle may have been near the start of this technology.

goododie4 replied: "While these efforts are conscious and worthy in consumption - big oil has a growing Asian and Indian market, that is worth 50 times the US market - and as a commodity fossil fuel - is limited in supply, while demand is always there. The "raw" oil of demand isn;t the key factoring in the price of a barrel of oil - it is traders who set the price through an open market of future consideration, therefore if Americans saved 50% of our consumtion - the demand is always there for a price per barrel to remain north of $75 and will continue to climb, as the open market dictates. Additional sources around the globe of oil discovery "may" be the only thing that offsets OPEC's and big oils hold on prices - but history has shown they all play together..."

jamesPurple replied: "of course"

sapito replied: "you have a great idea ....but think about it....why do most brand new cars can reach up to 120 mph....if the maximum speed limit is 70mph on interstate highways 75mph in like 4 states??? why would you want a car with 120mph capability when you are not allow legally to drive at that speed? it is all about money my friend ....if they were to make cars with a max power of 70 mph our own government would lose thousands of dollars in revenues from tickets.....this can be done yet there is no legislation for it..........it is all about money...Money makes the planet go around....just a saying...."

Arbitrage replied: "It's not really feasible unless we get other sources of energy as well (solar, nuclear, wind, geothermal, tidal, etc.). If you study chemistry and look more closely at your links and the process, you will see that cars don't run off of straight water. You can't just pour tap water into your gas tank and it'll run off the water. Instead, the water has to under electrolysis first to get the hydrogen out and then the car runs off of hydrogen. The slight "problem" is that if you look at the chemical reactions, electrolysis is a very expensive process that takes quite a bit of energy. Where are you going to get that energy? You need other sources of energy if you need that fuel as mentioned above. Reducing the speed limit to 55 mph like we did before would save some fuel, but knowing human nature, everyone is going to complain and people are going to drive at whatever speed they want anyway. I wouldn't mind because I don't need to drive since I take public transportation, but I'm sure plenty of motorists enjoy the feel of going really fast with their cars even though it wastes a bit of gas. That's just how the world is these days."

How do you save money on groceries for big families (7 or more people)? Clipping coupons and buying in bulk hasn't saved us anything. In fact it has cost us more at times. I know to look for things on sale. I go to the store with the best prices. Are there other things I can be doing to save our family money? Thanks.

curious replied: "I don't know where you live, but in Australia the supermarkets mark down the price of the fresh food close to closing time. Most supermarkets close around 9 pm but if you go in about 7 or 8 they have marked down all of the bread, alot of meat and dairy. Give it a go, it works well for me"

Glennroid replied: "There's a lot to be said for coupons, but you really have to organize and use them wisely. Many stores allow double or triple coupons on certain days, find out when. Buying in bulk isn't always the best bet, you really have to know your unit costs to know when you're getting a deal on bulk. Often bulk isn't any cheaper at all."

Larry V replied: "watching for sales, comparison shopping, coupon clipping - and judicial use - ... these are the things one generally does. Plan menus carefully - avoid snack / junk foods. Plan menus so that you could something larger then use it in a variety of methods. I hope this suggestion isn't out of line, but ask your question over on the Rachel Ray Show web site. She frequently gets questions that she then works on in show episodes. Your question is a great one and one that, if Rachel hasn't answered in the past, I suspect would interest her a lot."

kelseemorgansmom replied: "I know how you feel. There are 5 of us in our family. We have stores such as SaveA Lot and Aldis around where we live. Its easier to just set back any extra money and put it in a jar and put it in a safe place and you would be surprised how fast it adds up. We are constantly going to the store and my husband has a coronary every time we go to check out. Sometimes you can get better deals buying in bulk but most of the time it does just cost more money."

Chokolates4u replied: "Finding a friend or another family that shops the Warehouse clubs like Sam's ,B.J's or Costco. Purchase bulk items and split the items up at home. This way you both save and split cost. Learn to cook efficiently and freeze meals. Make soups and breads and don't buy sodas but make teas. You'll find that your family is spending more on junk food and processed foods when you can purchase healthier choices and the family stays full longer. Long grain brown rice, pack of skinless chicken breasts, paks of flounder or fish, pick up milk cheaper at CVS in our area. Learn to season foods to keep it interesting and different even though you maybe serving chicken or fish again. You can do it. You just need to put in more research and keep watch on those flyers that come in Sunday newspapers or your local grocery stores. Buy the 2 for one deals when you can and stock up on items that you use alot. Get together with the girls and exchange coupons with them as well as having fun socializing. Put out an upside down hanging tomato plant outside and in the sun. They grow well and you can even make a hydroponic system indoors for growing tomatoes, herbs and veggies. Check the internet or You Tube for making these things. Scotts toliet tissues are better for the money and more of it. Get the large packs when on sale for around $10.00-11.00 Make your own cleaning supplies and go to the dollar store for liquid shower gels and soaps. Note not everything is cheaper at the dollar stores but certain things are."

Greg R replied: "There were some helpful suggestions, but I have a couple to add there were not mentioned. Focus of the lowest cost per pound of food. For instance, what's the difference between potatoes and potato chips? They are both made from potatoes. I live in Maine and buy potatoes from a local farm for $15.00 for a 50 pound bag. That works out to 30 cents per pound. Potato chips cost $2.99 for an 8 ounce bag. That's almost $6.00 per pound. 2 pounds of pasta costs $1.50. That's 75 cents per pound. A 50 pound bag of rice costs under $20.00 Thats 40 cents per pound. Eat a lot of rice, pasta, and potatoes. Their cost is very low per pound. Avoid the high cost per pound items such as filet mignon, lobster, etc. Have those types of foods very sparingly as a special treat. I wish you and your family well."

Ralph C replied: "I also have a big family and bulk sale is not the best option. The way to save is probably more simple than you think. Make a weekly schedule of the meal menu and but only those items that you really need....no excess. What I found is that I was buying bulks and items in specials that we were not using. In ocassions, we had to throw items to the garbage as they were not utilized prior to the expiration date. When buying for the menu, seek for specials and discounts using coupons, but look at the gas you have to spend to look for the specials. Buy bulk only items that have a fast turn-over (e.g., Cereal, refreshments, juices, etc). So these are the simple 3 rules: - Make a weekly menu and stick to it. Buy only what is necessary for the week. - Use specials acd coupons as necessary, but always evaluate the cost to get to the special versus the savings. - Buy bulk items ONLY for items with fast turnover."

What are ur favorite ways to save money? I like to clip coupons, and I have a rule "never buy clothes full price" so I wait for sales or promos. I also refer friends to beauty salons or make friends w/ the employees to get discounts or freebies. I like to buy things off eBay that may have been worn once or twice. How do YOU save $?

Ms. Newlywed replied: "Something great to do is keep track of your expenses in your checkbook and always round off the amount you spend, and at the end of the month, deposit all those extra cents that have been accumulated into a savings acount!"

Boomer replied: "I'm going Old School with this one...Piggy Bank! One that you have to break to get into! That way you won't get into it early. Great way to save money! Especially for specific items."

Gen. Lee N. Trubble replied: "Make a distinct difference between what you WANT and what you NEED. You'll save a bundle."

Dethruhate replied: "A very easy way to save money is to ask your employer to take extra money off your check for your taxes. If they take even an extra $75 off your check, you never see the money and when you do your taxes at the end of the year, you should get around and extra $2000 back."
