Popcorn With Cell Phones Facts in Answers
Is it really possible to pop popcorn with cell phones? I read an article from somewhere that someone poped a pile of popcorn by laying four cell phones around the pile of popcorn and then calling the cell phones. And the pile popped. is that REALLY possible or is it some kind of spam?

Klathorn replied: "no. it was a joke video."

It's That Guy replied: "The people who made that video admitted it was a fake. The video was made to advertise some kind of cell phone power booster. Cell phones don't have 1/10,000 of the power it would take to pop popcorn."

Adown replied: "no lol"

STAR S.S replied: "Hi there : If you read that some where,I actually saw it happen ...How? will if you search in youtube.com using (Cell Phone Popcorn) as your searching key word, you would see a lot of those who did it at their homes,schools,offices...etc But I noticed as -you would-that some of those gays are really making fun of this think which make you think twice before you believe it & you know what? I noticed that those popcorn are coming from the side of the table in those videos ! I think you need to read about cell phone and cancer here: by the way : the above link will take you to a page talking about the whole thing in details & at the bottom of the page there is an experiment shows you how to boil an egg using your cell phone I hope that was helpful for you. Best Wishes."

Do you think that the cell phones popping popcorn is true? Has anyone tried it yet? Do you think that the cell phones popping popcorn is true? Has anyone tried it yet?

dalevil replied: "never heard of it. and it doesnt make sense. a microwave pops popcorn coz it activates the water particles in the corn. and a mobile phone can never do such thing. imagine, if a phone could heat up to that level, then our earlobes will be fried. crispy thumbs, anyone?"

Mr.Roboto replied: "Its not true, I've seen several news stories on it that disprove those videos of popcorn popping via cell phone. In fact, the news people went so far to even contact the makers of the video, only to find out they were working for a company. I'm pretty sure it was a hair conditioner company but I'm not positive. Not exactly sure why they did popcorn for a hair product but ya that's what I saw on the news. So basically those videos were just advertisements, just really bad ones lol"

Darren J replied: "I've added a YouTube link that shows this phenomena. I suspect it is a hoax, but you decide for yourself."

BioVector replied: "It's not possible. The only way it could happen was if a cell phone could make water boil. There is a bit of water inside a kernel of corn. When it is heated to boiling, it's expansion causes the kernel to pop."

to try the cell phone popcorn experiment do the 3 phones around it need to be on vibrate or what? i saw it on google and decided i wanted to try it! pleazzzz! what do i need to do to do that experiment.

tazzy_2207 replied: "It doesn't matter what the phone is set on. You can have it on silent, vibrate or loud."

Just Q replied: "Vibrate!"

DJ_t36 replied: "The thing that made that possible is the radiation that the phone emits. So, you could silent it. Have you tried watching that experiment where they cooked an egg with two cellphones held for 5-10 minutes facing the egg. It is just because of the radiation."

Phil replied: "This experiment is a hoax. The cell phone simply cannot cook anything with its microwave radiation because: 1) the radiation is far too weak compared to the level required to cause the dielectric heating effect, and 2) a cell phone loses almost all of its radiation as it propagates out into the air, so only a tiny fraction of an already-tiny level of radiation makes it to the kernels of corn. A microwave not only uses much stronger energy, but it also encloses the food in a metal cage so that almost none of the energy escapes, thus focusing it all onto the food product. This experiment is simply a viral hoax intended to make people either laugh or consider throwing their cell phone away -- but I promise you, it will not work if you try it, even if you had a couple hundred phones."

how do u make popcorn with cell phones? please tell and ez best answer. plus how do u give best answers?

§å|N† j!Mm¥ replied: "Popcorn with cell phones can be done. Watch how they do it. also, um best answers? just give the most intelligent answer you can by giving your sources and references and other places the asker can go to for help."

gargspy45 replied: "It's fake.... I am sure there are thousands of people out there trying it right now. The fact of the matter is that your phone will not create any such heat or radiation that will result in the cooking of popcorn. I work for a cell phone manufacturer, and we are required to test for such harmful emissions by the FCC before a product can be approved to be sold. (Check the link below...someone tested this rumor.) Oh...and for best answers you have to wait for your question to expire, and then go into "my questions". It will then give you the option to pick the best answer. I believe that video is just another trick of the camera. :)"

Bammer replied: "you use your phone to order some... :P"

krennao replied: "You can't. Did you know the internal temp for a kernel has to be 450. degrees. Tell me how a cell phone can do that? it can not. Don't believe crap you see on the Internet."

Four cell phones pop popcorn!! How does that work? Have you seen the youtube videos where three or four cell phones pointed into middle of table. Kernals of corn placed in the center. People call the phones at the same time and the kernals popped!! Can anyone explain that!???

Charlie149 replied: "Cell phones transmit in the band between 800 - 900 Mhz. This is very close to the frequency used in microwave ovens (915 Mhz). The microwave transmitters in the cell phones are heating the water inside the popcorn kernels, just as you would get with microwave popcorn. Could this work? How much energy is required to pop a kernel of popcorn and how much antenna energy can a cell phone generate? Let's make some rough estimates. I weighed 50 popcorn kernels on my kitchen scale and they had a mass of 6 grams, which comes to about 0.12 grams per kernel. Googling around, it appears that a healthy popcorn kernel has 14% moisture content, which means that each kernel contains about 0.02 grams of water. Heating water from room temperature to 100C is a temperature difference of 70C (plus 2270 J/g vaporization energy to make steam). We know that the specific heat of water is 4.184 joules per degree per gram, so we are looking at about (0.02)(4.184)(70) + (0.02)(2270) ≈ 50 J of energy to pop a single kernel (this makes some assumptions about how popcorn pops which might not be correct, but this is just a rough approximation). Also Googling around, it appears that cell phones can have a maximum power output of 2W, which is 2 joules per second, so four phones could in theory be capable of radiating 8W of microwave power, which over a span of ten seconds or so would result in 80J of energy -- enough to just pop one or two kernels. However, the radiation from the phones would certainly not couple at 100% efficiency to the popcorn kernels (probably 10% or less), resulting in more like 8J of energy -- far less than would be needed for a single kernel. So while in theory there could be sufficient energy coming from the cell phones, it is not likely to be able to pop the kernels. This doesn't prove that the YouTube videos are fakes, but it makes it rather unlikely that they could be authentic. =============== Note: LondonLou's calculations overestimate the mass of a popcorn kernel by a factor of eight and underestimates the maximum power output of a cell phone by a factor of two."

neverhome2stay replied: "Cell phones use less than 1 watt. Nothing close to the 900 watts a microwave uses. The video is fake. Try it yourself. Or check out Snopes: and scroll to the bottom."

stephankendal replied: "This isn't an egg, it's one or two kernels of popcorn with four cell phones. It is certainly possible to generate that much heat."

I <3 my boys replied: "It doesn't. It's a hoax. Look here: "

LondonLou replied: ""Plausible? Let us do a little math. Popcorn pops because the water in it turns to steam and a kernel is about 14% water. So, if we assume a kernel of popcorn weighs 1 gram, it has 0.13 grams of water. Heat that water from 30C to 100C would take: (0.14g)*(100C-3 to turn the water to steam requires the latent heat of vaporization, which is 2259J/g. 2259J*0.14g= 316J for a total of 316J 41J = 357J. Wattage = Joules/seconds. If it took about 5 seconds to turn the water in the popcorn kernel to steam, then the wattage required was: 357J/5sec = 71W assuming all power from the cell phone transmitter went into the kernel. Cell phones typically have 0.75W-1W transmitters in them. With a 1W transmitter, it would take, 334J/1W = 334secs, if all power is transfered to the kernel. You decide." You can't argue with mathematical law!"

Lazerus JPA replied: "I'm too tired to sit and do the equations myself, but if it works, it works-- if it don't, who cares. Cool video, to say the least. For someone "microwaving" their brain for two hours a day (or more!) with a ½ watt "microwave transmitter" (cell phone) for say, 20 years??? That's BOUND to cause some damage.... **Yawn** G-nite all!"

Phil replied: "A cell phone cannot cook popcorn or anything else for that matter. Yes, a cell phone emits microwave energy, and technically this radiation could cook stuff -- if it was 1) much, much stronger, and 2) if it was focused. The problem with the cell phone trying to cook something is that it transmits energy at a fraction of the wattage that a microwave oven's magnetron generates. Additionally, efficiency is extremely small as a cell phone's radio waves escape in all directions away from the kernel of corn, whereas a microwave oven is a metallic cage, acting like a room of mirrors to focus almost all of the energy. A cell phone cannot cook anything; even a hundred cell phones put together could not cause the dielectric heating effect that you witness in a microwave. The question of cell phones being safe to use is a subject of debate, but as far as the extreme RF heating effects of microwave radiation goes, a cell phone simply cannot do it."

what is a good hypothesis for popping popcorn with cell phones? i have a biology project due to marrow and i cant think of any hypothesis i could use please help

Bloudy Un De Bloudy Tra Ose replied: "what do you mean? and popping pop corn with cell phones is imposible"

Tiffypoo replied: "three phones are aimed at a few kernels of popcorn arranged in the middle of a table; the cell phone numbers are dialed; the phones ring; the corn pops instantly. There is no detectable trickery."

Otis replied: "yeah right, there is no way to pop popcorn with a cell phone unless you take the batteries, use the wires inside to make resistors, and therefor a heating element, and put the kernels on it. If your lucky and do it right you might get a few kernels popped before you run out of juice... If there was a way to do it under normal operating conditions, there would be millions of lawsuits for people burning their ears, cheeks or brain damage."

pisgahchemist replied: "I'm not going to dignify the cell phone and popcorn nonsense. But I can give you some solid information about developing hypotheses. The first thing you need to understand is what a hypothesis is. Forget that nonsense about an "educated guess". I have no idea where that got started, but it's ridiculous. Also the nonsense that says that you should start an "experiment" with a hypothesis was written by someone who wasn't a scientist. A hypothesis is a "tentative explanation". So in order to form a hypothesis you must first know something about what you have been observing. If you have observed that you can pop popcorn with a cell phone then you could develop a hypothesis that could explain it. Then you could design an experiment to test that hypothesis. But it is impossible to develop a hypothesis about anything that you know absolutely nothing. So find something about which you know something. Perhaps some observation that you have made. Then you can develop a tentative explanation of what you have observed -- that is the hypothesis. And then you can develop an experiment to test that hypothesis. Just remember. At no time during this process have we been doing any guessing, educated or not. Something simple. Here's something I've noticed. I have two Adirondack chairs sitting in my yard. They have been sitting in roughly the same places all summer. I've noticed that the grass seems to consistently be a bit longer and lusher under the chairs and in the shadow of the chairs. That's my observation. Now I can develop a tentative explanation for this observation. That is my hypothesis. Hypothesis: The chairs shade the grass and keep the soil from getting as hot and drying out thus leaving more moisture for the grass. Experiment: Take two identical patches of grass, and place an object over one patch of grass, but not directly on top of the grass, so as to provide some shade, while leaving the other patch completely exposed. Measure the average grass length and note its color in both patches. Also measure the soil temperature and soil moisture content in both patches. If the hypothesis is correct the shaded patch of grass will be longer, more lush, and the soil will be cooler and have more moisture. Good luck with your observations and your hypothesis. ======= Follow up ======= Here is a CNN report on how the popcorn and cell phone HOAX was created."

I saw a clip on yahoo showing 4 cell phones that popped popcorn, is that possible? They put 4 phones down with popcorn in the middle then called their phones using other phones. Is it possible to pop the kernals?

LOL342030 replied: "WOW! I JSUT SAW THAT VIDEO A COUPLE OF SECONDS AGO i dont know it seems possible try it for urself i guess"

Generalist replied: "As long as you have a camcorder and video editing software, any image can be created."

K.Thibodeaux replied: "a lot of people are saying its a hoax. but im going to see for myself when i have enough cell phones around to try that. but here's the website thats been passed around:"

simpleMind replied: "Ask yourself this question: "The last time I used a cell phone, did it burn my hand or my ear?" If the answer is no, then I think you might be on to something."

}-\00/-{ replied: "just chk'd out snopes it list this question as 'false'...\000/"

How do u pop popcorn with cell phones??????????? can u tell me how? ya it is possible....... i saw it on Youtube

ORAN-GE replied: "POP POPCORN with a cell phone?! Is that even possible?"

blue eyez replied: "that is fake..."

mila k replied: "you need like or 8 cell phones and some popcorn kernels. place 4 phones around a group of kernels, like 4 or 5, with the top end of the phone facing the kernels. Then call all 4 cell phones at the same time and watch what happens. I never tried this but i saw it all over youtube. It really cool!"

syaila_6044 replied: "yeah..it can be done.. try to search for the videos in yahoo videos.. u can find it there.. they put 4 cell phones and put the pop corn in the middle.. each of them call the cellphones that have been placed earlier.. let the phone ringing and then.. the pop corn will be pop!! so cool.."

nospampleasewii replied: "It's a hoax, debunked by many sites. Youtube is full of "real" stuff...."

BlueSea replied: "Good Morning American debunked this just today. Go to their website and watch and stop being so damn gullible EDIT So, you believe everything on YouTube, huh? What are you, like 8???? Gullible"

hotheat78 replied: "If you saw it on youtube, how about watching that video again and learning that way since you say its possible.."

what kind if pop do the people use in the youtube videos to pop popcorn with cell phones? i saw videos on you tube with popcorn that pops wen people call the phone anyy help Please!?!?!?!?!?

BACK-UP ACCOUNT replied: "You cant really pop pop corn with cell phones there was a heater underneath the table!"

Robert replied: "YouTube, Snopes, Braniac, etc. have debunked this... the video was genious. They removed a magnetron (electron gun) from a microwave and mounted it under the table... I'm sure you want to know WHY...? The company that release three videos on popping popcorn with cellphones is a company that... are you ready? MAKES BLUETOOTH HEADSETS. They thought, correctly, that people would actually believe that much radiation could come from cellphones, and would rush out and buy their headsets."

Can you really cook popcorn with Cell Phones? just wondering

Digby replied: "No - a popcorn machine or pan works just fine!"

hellogoodbye446 replied: "no because the waves that cell phones use aren`t microwaves."

Mike L replied: "NO I don't know the number of the frequency but there is not enough Power (wattage)"

Lisa replied: "L.o.l No........"

Phil replied: "No - a cell phone does generate microwaves, but they are much too weak to cause dielectric heating, and they are not focused on the kernels of corn so only a tiny fraction of the already-tiny power is actually available to the kernel. A microwave oven uses a much more powerful transmitter of radio waves, and then focuses the energy inside a metal cage. A cell phone cannot cook anything, not even a whole bunch of cell phones. And no, a cell phone will not cause harm by RF heating to humans."

Timmy replied: "No, but apparently someone has a fried brain from using their cell phone too much... LOL"

mila k replied: "yes actually you can its all over youtube!! but not in large quantities. you only need a few cell phones and a few popcorn kernels. its soo cool."
