My light bulb blew out in a bathroom wall sconce, leaving part of the bulb that screws in.? How do I remove it safely, without risking electric shock? I'm a single mom of 2 and don't want to take unnecessary risks.

jmad replied: "Turn off the electricity to the bathroom. Slice the very tip off of a potato and stick that end into the socket and screw the base out. Works every time."

ewendt128 replied: "Well you want to go ahead and flip the breaker to off. Then cut a potato in half and jam it in the socket without being to rough. Then it should unscrew with the potato."

robosscat replied: "jUST MAKE SURE THE SWITCH IS TURNED OFF AND UNSREW THE BROKEN PART BY HAND. IT SHOULDN'T BE TIGHT. JUST DON'T LET THE KIDS KNOW WHEN YOU'RE DOING IT. AS LONG AS THE SWITCH IS OFF, YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY POWER TO THE SOCKET. dON'T LET THE KIDS TURN THE SWITCH ON WHILE YOU ARE DOING THIS.CLOSE AND LOCK THE DOOR AND USE A FLASHLIGHT IF YOU WANT. IT SHOULD BE A LESS THAN A MINUTE JOB.....GOOD-LUCK"

40something replied: "Be sure you turn the power off at the breaker, not the switch. The switch may not turn the power off if there is more than one switch for that bulb."

gfgayle replied: "DO NOT USE YOUR HAND!! Turn/flip off the breaker and I also flip off the wall switch. Use either the potatoe or a pair of pliers that are covered with the shock-proof covering to twist the broken piece out."

Gonzo replied: "use a wooden stick turn off the light put the stick in the middle twist to the left and take out"

Hammer&Drill replied: "I always use pliars, just make sure the power is off, mind you I do it when the power is on and have never had a shock, so with the power off you will be certain."

pantysnatcher05 replied: "As long as the 2 strips of metal coming out of the broken bulb aren't touching you will be fine till day time then go to your breaker box turn off the main power or just the one to the room that the bulb is broken in the twist it out with pliers"

What is that fibrous sponge that is part of the wiring panel for a sconce light fixture? I am referring to the cushioning between the actual glass dome covering and the panel where the outlet for the light bulbs and wiring are. Every time I touch it, it itches all over my body, I assume the fibrous hairs come off easily even when shaken lightly. What type of material is it? is it a plastic or a organic material?
