Need help to install an extenal electronic tachometer on my peugeot 1.4 - 2000 partner combi? Hi. I have this old electronic tachometer and would like to install it on my peugeot but the installation sheet is talking about a coil connection for the signal! My car has a black long coil pack, where do I connect the signal ???

Az replied: "tachometres have to be fitted by registered garages and calibrated for use"

mr piri piri replied: "o.k"

Trevor Trillion replied: "The coil of an older car generates about 10,000 volts for the spark plug. Old coils sent voltage to the distributor cap via ONE wire. Modern coil packs send the voltage directly to each spark plug. I think your 'old electronic tach' will only be useable when it can receive 4 times the volt flashes from an old one-wire coil. IF you connect it to just one spark plug wire now, you will get fewer electronic signals, and I am guessing an inaccurate rpm reading. There are many places to buy an aftermarket tachometer for use on COIL PACK cars. for example:"

When I give my truck gas the tachometer flops up and down erratically.Transmission slip or engine trouble??? Ok so hear is the deal about 5 days ago I was at a stop sign and when I tried to beat traffic I gave it about half throttle. The truck sputtered across the intersection and then died. Then the next day I was driving about 30mph and when i gave it gas(about 1/2 throttle)to pass a car the tachometer started flopping up and down and my truck started jerking back and forth(kindof like when your in 4low and you quickly gas it then let off).Anyhow I thought it was choking for gas so I changed the fuel filter. The thing was so clogged you couldn't blow air through it at all and a bunch of black grime came out of it when i turned it upsidedown.so I figured that would help the prob. but as soon as i took it for a test drive it did the same thing when I gave it gas.I also noticed after it got hot you only had to give it about 1/4 throttle and it would start doing the erratic tach thing and start jerking around wich I know beleive to be transmission slippage..What you think?? btw.I checked trans fluid and its ok,but at 192000 miles I think it might be time for a flush and filter change. This is a 1994 gmc 1500 4x4 with a 4l60e BTW What could cause this besides a transmission problem??

Swamprat replied: "It could be several things. One you could have some bad gas ,ie water ,even some ethanol with high percentage could be bad for truck that old because of the type lines it has.You could have an electrical problem in the distributor or wires so when you put it under a load to speed up it fails.A truck with that many miles is bound to have gas tank full of gunk.Lastly it could be the carburetor with as much trash as you say was in the filter some was bound to get bye. Good Luck hope this helps."

musiclicker replied: "I own a shop, and think your engine is missing, and the culprit is probably trash in the fuel system. I wouldn't think its the transmission, even though it leads you to believe this due to the jerking, but you would be surprised at how bad a vehicle will jerk if it not running right. The smaller the engine, the more it will jerk or be noticeable. I didn't see where you stated which engine you have. One other thing that may be doing this is; the EGR valve sticking in the open position. When you gas it, and it wants to go crazy, is usually the EGR not closing back. It probably has a bunch of carbon built up on the shaft, and when you gas it hard, it works in an area it rarely sees, thus it will stick. Make it do it, and bang on the EGR with something to see if it then stalls, or makes a difference in the way its running. I think you just may find your problem. I have a 94 S-10 Blazer with over 250,000 miles on it, and it still runs great, but I stay after the things it needs done, and on schedule. Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!"

onebadatitude replied: "Might have an electrical grounding problem. Have you done any engine mods or stereo work that involved electrical wiring work? Double check yourself first"

Chuck C replied: "Thats a good one,Does your truck move when you give it gas?"

Are there sensors or computers in the engine that tell the instrument cluster/gauges what to display? Are these readouts given by some kind of sensor or computer? 1995 Buick Regal 1. RPM / tachometer readings 2. Gas gauge 3. Engine temp 4. Speedometer and odometer 5. Trip meter How come I can't see the sensors for these gauges? Where are they located in the engine?

Lover not a Fighter replied: ">> Are there sensors or computers in the engine Yes, there are about dozen sensors and a computer. ==== >> How come I can't see the sensors for these gauges? Where are they located in the engine? They are located all over INSIDE the engine. And would you know a sensor if you saw one? Good Luck..."

yonder101 replied: "They are sensors. I believe the Tach is located on the block. The Gas Gauge is a sending unit located in the gas tank. Enging Temp is also located on the block Speedometer is located on the tranny, and along with the odometer too i believe. What is the trip meter? same as odometer? if so then should be located on the tranny hope this helps."

I'm looking for a small tachometer (analog, lighted and white face preferred) for my little 3 cylinder smart.? Most tachometers can be switched from 4-6-8 cylinders. This does not help here. I don't wish to spend a fortune however. 2 1/16" Diameter is considered small.

Robbie N replied: "This is interesting. If you use a six cylinder tach it will read 1/2, so when it reads 2k the engine is 4k rpm. Here is where the arts and computer graphics come in. Get a six cylinder tach then create a new face for it. With all of the computer clip art and stuff out there you should be able to create one that will read correctly. Then remove the pointer, put in the new face and reinstall the pointer. Not a perfect solution but then you have an interesting problem. Good Luck!"

Tachometer wiring diagram? I got this tach a long time ago, its one of those 4 in 1 deals and I have misplaced the wiring diagram, anyone know which colors go to what? < thats if its like a universal wiring system, if not I guess im screwed Its got: 1. tach 2. h20 tmp 3. oil pres 4. oil temp

SERIALSTUNTER replied: "I beleive if you have a green wire "it" is the tach signal wire. It goes to (-) on the ignition coil and picks up the ignition trigger pulse. Then you have black (ground) and red (positve). If not any parts store should let you look at one of their diagrams if their decent people. Make sure you have the right tach for engine (4,6,8 cyl) may have switch on back."

How do I Install a Tachometer on a 1999 Toyota Corolla? 1998 and 99 Toyota corollas have DIS with wasted spark. where as 97 and older have distributor and 00+ have coil over plug. i currently have an aftermarket Tach spliced into a pulsing ground (yellow wire green stripe) on coil 1 which fires 1 and 4. the problem is the RPM values the tach shows are consistently half of what the car is actually doing. coil two has the same pulsing ground signal from a different pin from the ECU its a red wire with a blue stripe, i tried splicing into both and the tach did nothing. my question is, what did i do wrong? and how can i get the tach to display the correct values? (i.e what do i need to splice into?) any help would be appreciated as even a Toyota technician seemed slightly puzzled when i asked him how to go about installing a tach on that car. (he's the one that told me to use the yellow/green pulsing ground) its an aftermarket tach. the signal wire is green. but what im asking is WHERE do is splice it in

Kevin R replied: "there are four wires on the back of the tachometer depending on the engine size 2 wires are ment to be with each other. eg red and black is for v8, red and white is for v6 and white and green is for 4cylender etc."

Connect honda Tachometer to a Kawasaki motorcycle engine? I have a tachometer from a 1983 honda 750 shadow motorcycle. I have tried connecting it to a 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 motorcycle engine. The problem is that although both engines are 4 cycle/stroke the honda uses a dual fire ignition system ( spark plug fires on both compression/power stroke and exhaust stroke. The Kawasaki is designed to fire on the power stroke only. No surprise that when connected to the negative side of the kawasaki coil the Honda tach. registered only 1/2 the actual RPM's. I went online and found a electrical diagram designed to correct this, it didn't work. The diagram showed a wire coming from the negative side of each Kawasaki coil. Each wire passing through a 1N4007 diode (Radio Shack) and, also, a 100K Ohm resistor then connecting together and continuing to the tachometer. Tachometer will not work at all with the described wiring adaptor connected to both coils, disconnect from one of the coils and again I get a reading but only 1/2 of actual rpm, Any suggestions as how to fix my peoblem? Thanks.

bikinkawboy replied: "I'm no electronics genius, but I wonder what the resistor is for? Unless Honda uses a resistor in conjunction with their tach. I know Kaws but can't say for sure on "newer" Hondas. I can see the diodes to keep both coils from firing at the same time and before I read your complete post I was thinking along the same lines as what you described. Right now I'm stumped, maybe there's a Honda expert out there that knows Honda tachs."

Anyone have a transmission problem with their Mazda Protege 03? Hi, I have a 03 hatchback mazda protege (4 speed transmission automatic, 40k milleage) and recently noticed that the gas milleage has dropped; the car burns more gas. I mostly drive the car on highway and noticed that when going 65-70 mph, the tachometer stays in between 3 and 3 1/2. Most cars that I have driven so far, I have seen the tochometer stay around 2 1/2 when driving 65-70 mph. Is this something normal w/ this type of Mazda? I have done tune up/transmission fluid/and changed the Input speed sensor in the transmission! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

bruce p ♥ ♥ ♥ replied: "no. mazda are chitty."

Soviet CCCP replied: "i have not heard of the protege 323 having tranny problems - the 626 had problems in the late 80's early 90's. 2003 is the last year the car was produced (now mazda 3). the powertrain should be under warrenty. i never heard of gas milleage being linked to a tranny."

Car occasionally shudders (sort of) when I accelerate? Sorry if this is a lot to read, I'm trying to be detailed so I can get a decent diagnosis. I drive a '96 Ford Taurus and it's got about 57,000 miles on it. Not all of the time, but always when I'm going up an incline, when I accelerate it kind of feels like it's fighting it if that makes any sense. It's not a steady thing, like it's not just slow to pick up speed, it's sort of a quick thrust feeling until I've reached a constant speed. It doesn't do it every time when I'm driving on a flat plane, and I haven't really nailed down the other conditions under which it does it. I wish I knew cars better so I could describe it more clearly, but hopefully you catch my drift. This is when it's in drive (as opposed to overdrive, second, etc). The only other problems the car has had since it was bought from the original owner, in 2006 I believe, are the fan belt going bad and the coolant line leaking. I'm not aware of any significant problems the original owner had with it. It gets about 15 mpg city and I think between 22-28 highway, if that's any indication of what condition the engine is in. I'm not 100% on those figures though. I should probably add that there was one instance in which I was at a full stop at a light and for maybe two seconds the needle on the tachometer teetered back and forth in about a 1/4-inch arc and I could feel whatever was going on, it was as if I had been spasmodically accelerating, but my foot was on the break pedal. I can't remember how long I had been stopped once this occurred, whether I had just come to a stop or had already had the brakes on for a while already. Thank you so much if any of this made sense to you and you might know what's up. And I THINK, I'd have to go for a quick drive to check, that the "shaking" feeling speeds up as I speed up. Also, the engine light is NOT on and has not come within the last year, or more. Even though it's not on, would checking a code reader do me any good? Actually my front axle is messed up haha, I forgot about that, but it's been messed up for longer than I've been experiencing this acceleration weirdness. My mechanic/father told me the axle needs to be fixed at some point but it's not a top priority.

Claira Voyant replied: "Yeah, it's pretty tough to give an answer that's gonna be absolutely right, but the first thing I would look at would be a minor tune-up; a failing, but not failed, spark plug or wire will do that. Have your tires checked for separations at a local tire store; could be a bad drive axle, kind of a long shot tho. Good luck, I do hope this helps."

ray replied: "go to a local auto supply place and purchace a16oz. can of chevron techtron, and afuel filter, empty the can into the fuel tank, then fill the tank with 89or 91 octane gas then change the filter . in time it shuold help, also chaging the plug wires with motorcraft replacements will help gas mileage and rough start ups"
