How do I install a tachometer on my gas scooter? I want to install a tachometer on my gas scooter. Im thinking of buying a tachometer that connects to a spark plug on the 2 stroke engine. Will it work? (My scooter is a E-treme XG-499 2-Stroke Gas Scooter) Please help Almost forgot the tachometer I want to get is Equus Tachometer with 4-color illumination. Also does it need power. (12volt battery)

Cubby replied: "don't think it will work. Usually tachs are hooked up to the coil. Unless the instructions say so, and yes you need a power supply like 12 volt battery."

ickypig65 replied: "Why would you want to."

Paul S replied: "Waste of time with a twist and go(CVT Drive) with no shifting."

mr_d150 replied: "I looked up your scooter and the tach online and while it can be done, I think you need to really re-think this idea. You'll need a battery to run the tach. One big enough to do the job without being recharged / replaced everyday would take up half your floor board space and add another 15-30 pounds to an already under powered scooter. Then if you accidentally hook up the power backwards, you fry the tach. OUCH!!!! Speaking of the tach, I hope you're planning to use the smaller one as the big one would, IMHO, not look as good, but then you've also going to have to figure out how to mount it, and be able to turn it off so it doesn't drain the battery Ask yourself why you really want to do this. It won't make the scooter faster. It will distract you from watching the road and since the scooters of this type aren't praised for stability or cornering precision, I really believe you're going to be too busy to watch it anyhow. Like one person said, the scooter has a CVT so it's not like you need to watch the "R's" for a shift or anything. Is it just going to be 'bling"? Save the bucks to get yourself a bigger scooter or motorcycle later. You'll be glad you did. But, it's just my opinion. Budd P.S. the bigger scooters and M/C's already have tachs"

Will a tachometer help me on learning to take off on a stick shift? My car has no tachometer, and i am having many problems taking off, so i bought a tachometer but still have to install it, so will this help me? I mean isn't it much easier with it, all i have to do is wait for it to drop then give it gas? correct? and also it will show me exactly where the sweet spot is in the clutch so i can get use to it faster. right?

ted-the-toolman replied: "NO. The tachometer really exists to warn the driver not to rev too high. I suggest taking the car to a large, empty parking lot and practice 100 times. I learned to drive stick with no prior instruction, and just jumped out into traffic with my second car. LOL, my first didn't have an engine or transmission so I didn't get to practice with that one (long story) Anyway, everybody's different, but one sure way to get the feel of the clutch is to take my advice in the first sentence. This way when you stall (and you will), you won't upset drivers behind you or even get accidentally rear-ended."

jetengine767 replied: "It will help to know when to switch gears, but you should be able to tell by the sound of the engine."

junkmailque replied: "No, taking off is something you do by feel. Tachometer is more of something to tell you when you should shift if you are racing the engine. Otherwise you do it entirely by feel. Most cars I have driven don't have tachometers with the exception of a few newer ones. I only look at the tachometer on those cars while trying to save gas, but even then you can pretty much feel what the engine speed is. Manual cars I have driven without tach: VW Bug, VW sandrail, Toyota Tercel, Ford F150, Ford Ranger, Honda Civic, Chevrolet C/K (old pickup), Nissan Sentra, Saturn SC2 (gauges did not work). I couldn't imagine any of these cars having been any easier to drive with a tachometer."

Sam H replied: "The Tach shows your RPM's. Its more made for knowing when to shift after you are actually moving. The Tach really will do nothing to help you in first gear. Just practice. Hell, I started driving stick during rush hour. Can't say i was good at it, I stalled in a intersection. But you'll learn quick like that!!!"

spur4eight replied: "Yes, a Tach can be usefull in learning where your clutch engages at, and in shifting at the exact same engine RPMs every time for the best possible shift every time. When taking off from a stop, you can slowly let the clutch out until the rpm's drop, then feather the gas pedal while continuing to slowly release the clutch. Every vehicle is a little bit different, so if you can't hear your engine, a tach will really help you get the right amount of clutch release/gas pedal mixture - provided you use it correctly."

i bought a tachometer for my gto and it reads up tp 8000 rpms? to what should i adjust the redline pointer so i dont over rev.? its a sunpro tach 2 . its going on a 71 lemans clone gto with a 383 in.it was a chevy but bored it out 30 over. it has a th400 and its automatic. and the shifter does not have a shift light.

Vinniebagodonuts replied: "How fast do you want your engine to spin? What is the Max rpm limit you want your engine to safely turn w/o coming apart, set your shift light to that rpm.Every time you hit the rpm limit, the shift light will come on and shift ."

AMBER L replied: "not sure there are any tach's out there that control shift points basically since your car is automatic then it is going to shift when it needs to not much reason to have a shift light on your car except to monitor your rpm's personally i would not rev past 6000 maybe 5000 if the motor is older"

Where can I buy a two-stroke tachometer for a magneto ignition that picks up off the plug wire? I believe it's called an induction tachometer.

Installing an aftermarket tachometer in a 1992 Corolla? I have a 1992 Toyota Corolla and it doesn't have a tachometer. I'm planning on buying one from a place like AutoZone for like $30-$60. Does anyone know if there have been problems with installing aftermarket tachometers in Toyota's? Are there any tachometers that would not work in a car that old? How would I install the tachometer?

12pleze replied: "Pos to pos and neg to neg then attach to distributer and thats it. Only counts RPM's so will work on anything."

Megan R. replied: "Installing aftermarket tach. Easy. One wire to ground, one for the light to come on when you turn on your headlights( tapped in-line), and the last wire to the distributor for RPM pickup. Your done. All tachometers are universal meaning it would work when there is reference for RPM at the distributor. Unless you have a distributorless vehicle which is not in your case, a regular RPM gauge would do the job."

Where can I buy an instrument cluster gauge thingy? I have a 96 corolla dx and i want to replace my instrument cluster gauge (with the speedometer, fuel and temp gauge) because my corolla has no tachometer, and no, i do not want an add-on tachometer. Anyone know where i can buy one that looks good and relatively cheap? Thx.

bill (dollar bill) replied: "A Toyota salvage yard or junk yard........The Toyota dealership will be able to order it for you......Just need lots of money!!!!!."

Kenny D replied: "If you want to buy a replacement instrument cluster you can buy one here: If you want to have your instrument cluster repaired you can get that done here: Here is one with a tach:"
