Tachymeter Watch Facts in Questions
What is the use of a Tachymeter in a watch ? I had an imported watch with a tachymeter but it had no function. I think it was fake. So I have stopped buying watches with tachymeters (lol). Maybe in some watches it works & it also looks good (fancy) but if it has n't any function I think its no use getting a watch with a tachymeter. Also what is the function of a Chronograph in a watch ? I am seeing many expensive watches here in India with that thing.

retroactivism replied: "The tachymeter is just a bezel marking that gives an indication of speed. It is often used by sailors to determine their average speed between two markers of known distance. The tachymeter is usually tied into the chronograph function. Starting the chronograph at the first marker then stopping it at the second marker will give you your average speed between the two. Example, two markers are 1km apart. You start the chronograph which starts the chronograph hand moving. When you pass the second marker the chronograph hand is stopped. The chronograph hand now points at the 60 mark on the tachymeter. Based on this, you know that you travelled an average of 60km/h."

How to use the Tachymeter on my watch? can someone please tell me where to find info or tell me how to use the Tachymeter function on my watch. i understand its used to est speed but how... thank you

general_baboonery replied: "read the instructions, it will probably cover said subject matter in some detail, it might even have a diagram"

Me again replied: "I shamelessy copied and pasted this from the web. How To Use A Tachymeter Learning By Example - Here Is A Common Example Using A Tachymeter Measure the average speed a racecar is traveling. Start the chronograph function when the car passes the starting line, and stop the function after the car travels exactly one mile; noting esitionof the chronograph hand.In this example, the hand points to the 4 hour position (20 seconds elapsed). Now, looking beyond the 4 hour position to the Tachymeter dial face, reveals the number 180. The tachymeter indicates a computed speed of 180 MPH. Example 2) Observing a slow moving object. Since recorded time lapse must be between 7.2 and 60 seconds, the distance to travel for the recorded time must be short.. Example: It took 36 seconds for a sailboat to travel 1/10 a nautical mile. Reading the tachymeter dial, 100 knots is indicated. However, since 1/10 of a nautical mile was traveled, the actual answer is 1/10 of 100, equals 10 knots. Example 3) Observing a very fast moving object Example: A plane travels 10 kilometers, in 10 seconds. The tachymeter dial points to 360. Therefore, the answer is computed to 10 X 360; equals 3600 km/hour. Other Uses For A Tachymeter Dial A tachymeter can be used to measure gas consumption. Example: It took 50 seconds to burn up 1 gallon of gasoline. Reading the tachymeter scale at the moment 1 gallon was consumed, reveals the number 72. This computes to 72 gallons of fuel per hour is being consumed. With more experience using this easy tool, a user will quickly realize the usefulness of a tachymeter."

Ranjeeh D replied: "Its not used to estimate speed, its used to measure speed. In the days before electronic cockpits I checked groundspeed by checking the DME counting down against tachymeter of my watch. To make it more accurate I timed it over two miles, then doubled the resulting speed. It proved to be pretty accurate. The point is it is only as accurate as you can measure. If there are road posts at each mile or kilometre you can use them to check your car speedo."

TriPolar replied: "just google tachymeter. it is for figuring speed"

what does is a tachymeter in a watch suposed to do? I am buying a watch and there is a $20 diffrence in the price and one has a tachymeter and one dosen't.

whirredup replied: "Tachymeters measure speed. You time how long it took you to run a certain distance or do some given task and that is how fast you did it."

Ylmas replied: "Friend, help this old question up for a vote. Good Day!"

What is a tachymeter on my watch and how to use it? And also what is the north south directions?

Mr. Answers replied: "I think it has something to do with compass points. I don't really know how to use it on my watch. I bet we're not the only people."

TV guy replied: "A Tachymeter helps you estimate the speed you are going. It uses the basic formula that speed = Distance/time Here is how to use it: (For the full article see the link below) To use tachymeter, simply start the chronograph or stopwatch when the object measured passing the starting line. When the object reaches the next mile or kilometer marker, stop the chronograph or stopwatch. The point on the tachymeter scale that adjacent to the second hand of the watch indicating the speed (in miles per hour or kilometers per hour) of object traveling between the two points. For example, we want to measure the average speed of a vehicle is moving. Start the chronometer or stopwatch function when the car passes the starting line, and stop the timer after the vehicle traveled exactly 1 mile or 1 kilometer. Then look at where the chronometer hand (the second hand of the watch) is pointing to, and get the reading or value of the corresponding number at the tachymeter bezel or dial. Let’s say the stopwatch stop at 3 o’clock position, meaning 15 seconds had elapsed for the car to travel 1 mile or 1 kilometer. At 3 o’clock position, the tachymetre value shows that number of 240, which means the average speed of the vehicle was 240 mph or km/h."

Why would a tachymeter be on a watch? What use is it? Or rather, who would use it and for what?

davidkrump replied: "I would like to see one of those on a watch. I tachymeter is used for surveying. It is an instrument for measuring horizontal and vertical angles. It consists of a small telescope mounted on a tripod with graduations in both axis for reading the angels. I suppose it could also be used for celestial navigation."

mrkzey replied: "sorry davidkrump, you discribed a trasit, used in surveying. A tachometer is on a automobile, it measures the rpm (rotation per minute) inwhich the engine is operating at. Tachometers are most seen in cars that are manuals (stick shift) at certain intervals when the tact reads a certain number you are to shift to the next gear. this helps you maintain the high proformance of the car, and less wear and tear on the engine."

Rotating bezel on my watch a tachymeter? On my watch the outside bezel rotates and i have heard that it is used as a tachymeter. I dont know if this is true and if it is how do i use it? I looked it up online and i did not understand how my watch could be used to do these calculations... any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks.. p.s. hers a picture of teh watch so you can see what the bezel looks like to see if it is possible with the watch... thanks again! >
Mark G replied: "It is true. The scale is used to quickly compute an average speed or determine how long to travel a distance. If you are into sailboat racing , sports car rally or basic navigation they are handy otherwise they just make a watch sporty looking. The ring typically has an inner and outer scale of numbers. You rotate the ring to create a ratio or fraction of a known quantity like 10 Miles per Hour = 10/60 10miles/60min you can then look on the scale and determine how many miles you would travel in 30 min. OR if you were traveling at 60MPH 60/60 how long would it take to travel 60 miles if you travel @ 55 mph (about 65 minutes -see links image) The tachymeter pictured in your like is nothing more than a decoration and is practically useless. The scale is too course to be really usefull . See link below for a how to and note the detailed scales used."

Mark replied: "Second setting watch. If your watch is in error by 16 seconds, rotate the bezel so that the 0 is where is should be. Then you read the correct seconds off the outer dial."

mountain crusher replied: "The watch pictured does not have a tachymeter. The bezel dial is used as a count down timer. You would rotate the dial to the desired number of minutes past the current time, and when the minute hand gets to the 0 (12) position, time is up. A tachymeter calculates speed over a unit of distance. The link posted above in Mark G's answer does a nice job of describing how it works. As a semi-interesting aside, diver's watches w/ rotating bezels contain a ratchet as a safety feature, allowing rotation in one direction only. If the bezel is bumped while diving, it shortens the time, thereby preventing the diver from believing he has more time (air supply) left than he really does."
